Finding your perfect RED
A red lip is literally one of my favourite looks to do on myself and others! Some of you are scared to wear it though- and this upsets me! Generally this is down to the following reasons- and I hear them ALL THE TIME!
'Its tarty' or 'mutton dressed as lamb'
Look, I get it... when you see these girls dressed up to the nines with their red lipstick, blue eye-shadow and mini skirt (what a cliche!) ... sure its overwhelming to say the least. However if you lose the leopard print coat and hooker heels and find 'your perfect red' I can guarantee that you lose the tart and say hello Hollywood siren! Also, I know many ladies who are 50+ who wear red and look FABULOUS!
'It makes my teeth look yellow'
This is a common factor when choosing a red. Anything too orange or pink can have this affect on even the whitest of teeth. Try choosing a red with a cool or blue base tone. This helps to make your teeth appear whiter and knocks out that yellow hue. (scroll down for the colour chart!)
'I'm not brave enough to wear such a bright colour'
Ok. First things first, red doesn't have to be bright. It can be a hint of colour or it can be a pink-red or a berry-red. Red lipstick is not just about the colour its about a feeling, its about more than the lips that its on- its about the woman who's wearing it! It evokes a feeling, so whether that be sexy, powerful, sensual or just downright sassy. Wear your red with confidence and kill it honey.
So now that we have squashed the excuses as to why you can't or shouldn't wear red lipstick lets get on to which colour is the best for you...
Redheads and warm browns-
so take a look at the gorgeous Emma Stone (a lover of red lippy!) She's gone for what I like to call a classic Hollywood red- its a bright, orange/red. Unfortunately you red heads have the hardest task of finding a red that doesn't clash with your auburn locks and fair skin. Going for a brighter orange-toned red gives adds an extra bit of vibrancy and pop of colour to your complexion and because of the undertone, it works well with your hair colour. It may take a while to find an orange red that works for you but a firm fave of mine has to be Bobbi Brown Hollywood Red or for a dustier deeper red Charlotte Tilbury's Bond girl is a LUSH colour!
Another siren rocking a red lip is the stunning Lana Del Ray. Despite being a red head/ warm brunette shes opted for a deep berry colour. Again this colour works really well with the tones in her hair. A great way of wearing a berry colour is by actually matching it to the deep red tones in your hair so that you can be sure no clashing will happen! A lovely long lasting and smudge proof lipstick is Delilah Liquid lip in Retro.
As a blonde myself- I find my best red is what I like to call a true red or a blue red- this is a cool toned red and to be honest its a pretty bright one. I find anything too warm will make my teeth look yellow and any reds that are too pink just doesn't work with my hair colour. At the moment I'm LOVING Delilah's matte liquid lipstick in FLAME or another fave of mine is Charlotte Tilbury red carpet red.
Now you lovely ladies have a bit of a choice... You can wear brighter reds to pinky reds or more berry tones. So think bright blue reds like Delilah's matte liquid lipstick in FLAME or NARS limited edition bloodflower. Or pinky reds like Bobbi Brown RED or NARS JUNGLE RED. The pinkier tones work really well with the dark tones in your hair. (I'm mostly talking about cool toned brunettes, dark brown and black) For warmer toned browns please see above to the Red-Head section!
Grey, Lilac and pink hair
Because of the hue of your hair you can really only wear either a cool toned red (blue red- please see blonde/brunette sections) or a coral/red. Theres a gorgeous one by NARS- HEATWAVE or Charlotte Tilbury HOT LIPS are insane colours- or theres one by NYX called perfect red for those of you on a budget!
Always use a lip liner- this stops any bleeding around the lip line and can also be used as a tool to add more shape or make lips appear fuller.
If your wearing a matte lipstick- to stop lips getting dry use a lip balm before application and apply throughout the day to avoid your lips cracking and getting sore.
No matter who you are or what you do- there's a red for you! So be cool, be confident and rock that colour!
